The 1948 Bristol 400 car restoration project in which we have been commissioned to do, has come to us from Perth (Western Australia). Flight time from Sydney to Perth 4hrs and 36 minutes.

This is not foreign to us to restore cars from all over Australia.

Bristol cars was a branch of an established aerospace company. Which is why the engineering for these early Bristol’s were superb. Bristol launched its first motor car in 1947.

There is quite a few similarities between these Bristol’s such as the 400 and the pre-war BMW 2 Litre.

Plenty of people have already had the Bristol and the BMW confused with each other.

Bristol 400’s are built with a timber frame body with steel panels. The main alloy panels are the bonnet and boot lid.

Later model Bristols were all alloy, for example we restored.

The Bristol 400 has 3 Solex downdraft carburetors. Only 487 Bristol 400’s were known to be built, which makes it an extremely rare and collectible vehicle.

The 402’s were the most rarest of all Bristol’s.

Bristol 400’s were produced from 1947 through to 1950.

These cars were luxurious automobiles for its time, and the first automobile product from the british based Bristol aeroplane company. As the end of world war II came into sight the Bristol company made the decision to diversify its business.

They acquired a license from Frazer Nash to build vehicles on the pre-war BMW models.

Under the bonnet was a BMW 6 cylinder push rod engine that displaced 1971 cc’s and featured hemispherical combustion chambers. The engine was capable of producing 80 horsepower and top speeds of just above 90mph.

We will be communicating with our client via email and phone. He will pop in when he can to and from Perth to Sydney. We will, like all our clients be continually updating him of the progress and sending through updated photographs.
